Getting Started Series
SIAM@UIUC hosted three workshops on getting started with LaTeX, Git, and R during the spring semester of 2014. Participants brought laptops and followed along with exercises throughout the workshops to help them learn these technologies. The LaTeX workshop was led by Matthew Michelotti, the Git workshop was led by Andrew Reisner and Nathan Bowman, and the R workshop was led by Mark M. Fredrickson. We are hoping to hold similar workshops each semester in the future. The slides for these workshops are publicly available at https://github.com/SIAM-at-Illinois/Getting-Started-Series.
Paper Reading Sessions
Members sometimes get together to read a paper in a casual setting with refreshments. The papers, such as “From Euler, Ritz, and Galerkin to Modern Computing” and “Is Gauss Quadrature Better than Clenshaw-Curtis?” are technical in nature and often taken from SIAM journals.
Enjoy food, fellowship, and fun at one of our game nights! Whether you like party games or more strategic board games, we have something for you.
We sometimes host presentation from invited speakers. On September 19, 2013, Professor Andreas Kloeckner gave a presentation on “Quadrature by Expansion: A New Method for the Evaluation of Layer Potentials” (picture above).
